While kneading playdough and creating designs with some our Evergreen children, one of our parents asked about our playdough recipe as the playdough stays soft and workable for so long. Here it is:
2 cups flour
2 cups water
1 cup salt
2 tbsp. salad oil
4 tsp. cream of tartar
food colouring (optional)
Combine all dry ingredients in a heavy pot. Combine water, salad oil and food colouring (optional) in a bowl. Add wet ingredients to dry ones and cook over medium heat until it is a very thick, doughy consistency. Turn dough onto waxed paper. Shape into a ball. Store in fridge overnight in an airtight container after cooling.
- It takes quite a while for the mixture to thicken, and remains as a porridge-like consistency for quite some time. Keep mixing and don't give up. :) It will thicken.
- Options for food colouring: unsweetened cool-aid, tea (eg. peppermint,
- Can be stored at room temperature in a Ziploc bag
Have fun playing with playdough!
