Transition plan

3/31/2019

If you've ever wondered what the general plan is to help Alpenglow Grade 6 students transition into Lawerence Grassi Middle School (LGMS) for Grade 7 - well, your wait is over.  Take a look below all what each student goes through to prepare for their journey out of Alpenglow:

  • October/November - Digital Citizenship - all Grade 6 students across the division will complete the Everfi Ignition Program, which places them "in virtual environments to tackle technology issues including privacy, security, digital footprint, internet safety, online research, time management, cyberbullying, digital relationships, and the viral nature of the web.
  • January - First LGMS Transition Day & Visit - Grade 6 students were prepared  with questions they may have about LGMS which were then answered by former Alpenglow graduate students once at LGMS.  Students also participated in ice-breaking activities, a technology focus lesson, and were paired with former Alpenglow graduates to have them show their online projects and programs/apps they use in school.
  • February- a Right From The Start team member at LGMS visited Alpenglow to talk with the students about their first transition day at LGMS and their experience, and answered any lingering questions.
  • March - Second LGMS Transition & Visit Day - The students discussed and toured option classes and met teachers, and participated in more ice-breaking activities in the gym with LGMS students.
  • April - Parent info night at LGMS - parents of graduating Alpenglow students are invited to visit LGMS for a presentation on that what/where/when/why of the school and have the opportunity to ask any questions.
  • May/June - Former Alpenglow graduates will be invited to come to the Grade 6 classroom to answer any lingering questions from our soon to be graduates after the second LGMS visit.
  • Students have also been introduced to TypingPal which is a free online typing program as well as how to use google drive (which is program predominately used in Grade 7). Students will also prepare a Google Slide presentation to familiarize themselves.

This plan is ever changing as questions and comments arise from students and their parents and every effort is made to ensure the transition is as smooth and successful as possible for our Alpenglow graduate students.

Many families have questions surrounding how the transition from Alpenglow School into another school will go for their child, or has gone for other students after finishing Grade 6.

Here we will give you insight, information and personal stories of how it has been for some of our Alpenglow School graduates.
